Introduction
I have a dream, and that is to build a world without cancer.
In 1944, a very well known family in New York lost their 16 year old son to Leukemia. Most Leukemia patients, especially children, died within three months back then. The sons parents formed a foundation in 1949 named the Robert Roesler de Villers Foundation named after the son. The mission was to fund cures to beat the disease. In 1955, Leukemia remained a 100% fatal disease and was considered hopeless and impossible to cure.
Always remember that Impossible is just a nasty ten letter word, and never believe it!!
Because of the families vision and passion, the foundation soon changed its name to the Leukemia Society and later the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to encompass all forms of cancer. Over 1.3 billion dollars have been raised throughout the years, and today 9 out 10 children will Beat the disease. As more and more cures are developed, it has carried over to cure all different forms of cancer. People are surviving different forms of cancer today because of the Society's effort.
I am a blood cancer survivor, thanks to a wonderful drug named Rituxian. LLS partially funded the research that developed my miracle drug. This year, I am carrying the torch and moving the mission along. Throughout my life I have always heard the word impossible, and it has only motivated me to prove something different. I totally believe and know that cancer will be BEAT during my lifetime, and that is one of my dreams that I know will come true.
