The 2013 Man and Woman of the Year is now underway! On April the 4th, we had our Kick-off event at the University Club on top Nob Hill in San Francisco. I knew that it would be a dressy event, so I stopped at Macy's and bought a pair of slacks, a shirt and tie that afternoon. I already had a blue blazer that I had bought back it 1986. I needed baby wipes to clean the dust off the shoulders as it sat in the closet so long. I left work at 3:30, and soon I was driving to the big event. By 4:35pm, my little Honda CRV was parking in small hidden corner of a garage near the event. I jumped out and took off my tennis shoes, blue jeans and tee shirt ( STREAKER !!!), and put on my new fancy attire. Total extreme make over and now I looked the part!
The University Club was open at 5:30, and I arrived very early. The Big Event began at 6:30, but arriving early gave me a good opportunity to meet the Boy and Girl of the Year, and meet other candidates.

The Man and Woman of the Year campaign is one of the key fundraising events for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The six male and female candidates are nominated by (LLS), and we all take part in a ten week competition. Which male and female will raise the most amount money by the end of the ten week period? Who will crowned the Man of the Year & Woman of the Year ?
I was asked to be apart of the MWOY campaign last year, but turned it down. I had no desire to be the Man of the year, and I did not want that title. Well, I was asked again in 2013 and finally gave in. I want to make it clear to all you that read this: "I am doing this event only to raise a ton of money to fund new cures and treatments to BEAT blood cancers and all forms of cancer. I am not after a title........., only cures!!
This photo is with Sarah and her family, she is our Girl of the Year honoree that has BEAT leukemia. She is now eleven and totally active again. No more needles, IV bags or hospitals anymore. She is out living life, having fun and telling the world donate!!! Cancer is being Beat and we need your help to end this disease! I also had the opportunity to meet "Rhett" and his family. Rhett is our five year old Boy of the Year, and he has one more year of treatment to BEAT his Acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Rhett told the the crowd that ........." My name is Rhett, and I do give a damn!!!".

Go to my Man of the Year campaign and donate to fund new cures, treatments and drugs. Always remember that in 1955, leukemia remained a 100% fatal disease and was hopeless and impossible to cure. Thank you Rhett and Sarah for Proving the POSSIBLE as we end this disease!

In an effort to prove the possible, I completed my fourth 31 mile ultra marathon this year on Sunday April 7th. It was muddy and extremely difficult, but 7 hrs and 19 minutes later it was complete. There was over 6800 feet of elevation gain and it was very challenging to say the least. As I ran I thought about Sarah and what challenges she faced as she went through 3 years of treatment. I thought about little Rhett, and what he goes through at this time. When I fell all the pain that remains from my blood cancer, and those two kids........I just keep on running further and raising funds and awareness about this disease.

This next weekend on April 20th, I plan to prove the POSSIBLE once again, and run 45 to 50 miles. I still need to come up with a course, and try to figure out how to get home. I am not quite sure where the course will lead me, but I will probably have Laura and the kids pick me up somewhere down the road. This will be my last long run, and then I will begin tapering as I get ready for the California Goldrush 100k event. The event will take place on May 11th, and begins at Sutters Mill up in the Gold Country. On that day, I will run 62 miles all the way down to Sutters Point in Sacramento. People tend to think that I am a bit nuts, but I just DO NOT believe in the word impossible. I totally believe that cancer will be BEAT, and that we will prove the POSSIBLE very soon. Malaria, Polio and Cancer will all prove to be totally curable.
I hope you will all join me in my quest to end this disease, and please donate!
We all need to prove the POSSIBLE in life, and go after our Impossible Dreams. People might think we are crazy, nuts, or goofy......, but that's ok!!!
David:)
